About 6 years ago my oldest daughter, then just 3 yrs old, came home from a playdate crying and begging us to make her hair “straight and yellow.” We were stunned! At three years old, our perfect little girl had already found something about herself that she felt wasn’t good enough and needed to be fixed. She cried herself to sleep that night. Immediately my husband and I began a search for books about absolute self love and acceptance. The problem is, they were very hard to find for three year olds and even harder for children who looked like mine. After a year and a half of not finding what I was looking for, I took matters into my own hands and wrote and illustrated,
“I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair! A story about loving yourself just the way you are!”
I love this book. Not because it’s mine. I love this book because it not only helped my daughter see the beauty in being herself but it has also helped countless other little girls (and boys) realize that they are perfect just as they are. It is our differences that make us magnificent and we should be proud of them!
I want my children to overflow with self love and acceptance. So far, this book has helped them do just that :).
